Good Morning Rock City – The Opening of Retro Tour

The opening of Retro Tour 2026 in Mwanza was one of the most demanding LED screen projects I have ever worked on. What started as a well-planned production quickly turned into a race against time. Delayed logistics, changing site conditions, structural challenges, and a compressed setup schedule forced the entire technical team to rethink the project multiple times before show day.

Despite the pressure, the goal remained the same. Deliver a stage experience worthy of one of Tanzania’s biggest music tours.

Project Overview

The event took place at Rock City Mall, Mwanza, under The Climax Liquors. I joined the project as the LED Screen Provider, Engineer and Screen Operator, responsible for LED screen planning, installation supervision, system configuration, signal distribution, troubleshooting, and live show operation.

The original stage design featured a large overhead LED structure, multiple display surfaces, lighting integration, and large-format visual coverage for both the audience and performers. However, as execution began, several unforeseen challenges forced us to adapt in real time.

The Challenge

The project was originally discussed and planned well in advance. However, final execution approval arrived only five days before the event. This immediately created pressure across every department.

The challenges included:

• Extremely limited setup time
• Equipment transportation delays from Dar es Salaam
• Multiple engineering teams arriving from different regions
• Structural rigging concerns
• Continuous design adjustments
• Lack of sleep during the final production days
• Last-minute technical failures

By April 23rd, some critical equipment had still not arrived in Mwanza. At that moment, we had to decide whether to scale down the vision or find a way to deliver the experience within the remaining time. We chose to fight for the show.

Process & Execution

Planning & Site Assessment

Upon arrival in Mwanza, the stage structure was already under construction. My first responsibility was evaluating the LED screen layout against the actual site conditions.

Together with the event planner (ahmed Ally), designer (Mbembo Creation), lighting engineer (Color_Language), and sound engineer (Mlawcoz), we reviewed the original design and identified areas requiring modification.

As time became tighter, we conducted several replanning sessions to ensure the project could still be executed safely.

Structural Rigging & Safety

One of the most ambitious parts of the design was a large overhead LED structure suspended above the stage. The structure required careful rigging considerations, including:

• Load distribution
• Audience safety
• Performer safety
• Structural stability

As installation progressed, we determined that the overhead structure could not achieve the level of safety and stability required within the available timeframe. The difficult decision was made to remove the structure entirely. Although this reduced the visual scope of the original design, safety remained our top priority.

Rapid Screen Installation

Once the final design direction was approved, the team moved into full-speed execution. Additional manpower was brought on site. LED panels, support structures, and signal systems were installed simultaneously while lighting and audio departments completed their own setups.

At this stage every minute mattered. A delay in one department affected everyone else. The project became a true example of production teamwork under pressure.

Configuration & System Integration

Installing LED screens is only half the job. After installation, every screen must be:

• Powered correctly
• Assigned signal paths
• Configured
• Calibrated
• Tested
• Synchronized with the full stage system

I spent the entire night configuring the LED network and ensuring that all display sections communicated correctly.

The process included – Signal testing, Color verification, Display mapping, Screen configuration, Content routing, & Live feed preparation.

By this stage, sleep was almost non-existent.

Emergency Troubleshooting

On show day, another challenge appeared. A fiber transmission line connecting Front of House to the stage was accidentally damaged.

The issue occurred only hours before the event started. Instead of panicking, we immediately switched into troubleshooting mode. After identifying the fault location, I restructured the signal workflow and relocated part of the operation behind the stage. Additional team members were positioned in front of the audience area to monitor screen performance and communicate any issues in real time.

This solution allowed the show to continue without major disruption.

Final Results & Impact

By late Evening on show day, the system was finally stable. The LED screens were fully operational. Visual content was tested and approved.

Diamond Platnumz and the Wasafi team completed their final checks. When the show started, everything came together. Thousands of attendees experienced one of the most talked-about stage productions of the Retro Tour opening in Mwanza.

Although the original design was not completed exactly as planned, the final production successfully delivered:

• Large-scale LED screen coverage
• Stable visual performance
• Seamless content playback
• Strong audience engagement
• Reliable show execution under extreme pressure

The event generated significant online attention and became one of the most discussed productions following the Mwanza Retro Tour opening.
